is this an american thing? actors convinced they are players in the world of politics?
You mean actors like Ronnie Reagan, Arnie, Clint Eastwood, Jesse Ventura, Shirley Temple, Fred Thompson and Glenda Jackson?
no. i mean actors who are just fucking actors.
Meryl Streep has gotten publicity for herself, as has a publicity seeking politician. Everyone's a winner. Except the public.
Like Ronnie Reagan, Arnie, Clint Eastwood, Jesse Ventura, Shirley Temple, and Glenda Jackson were before they went into politics?
But in seriousness; I agree that too often actors seem to feel their platform requires them to make some sort of political or public interest statement. I guess they're well-intentioned but often they're a bit ham-fisted and always, ultimately, self-serving.
Captain Freedom FTW. Jesse's natural demeanor, facial expressions and voice always make for good entertainment regardless of what he's actually talking about.
I see the fightback against Streep has started. This was the women who defended Roman Polanski at the Oscars or Golden Globes a couple years back. That would be the sodomite of a 13 year old child Roman Polanski.
In general I like Jesse; anyone who's done the stuff he's done has a sense of humour and he doesn't seem to take himself too seriously, BUT there are instances where he'll step beyond the pale in terms of what I'd consider rational thinking.
That'll be the "foreign, creative, outsider" Polanski, right?
Not really sure why you are bringing her age into it, sure she's just an actor but Trump was just a real estate tycoon and reality TV show star and people cared enough about what he had to say at 70 to make him the next President.
I've no sound at the moment; is that the bit where he talks about having bigger arms than Arnie? I think the R2 Predator DVD I have has something similar, maybe on the commentary track.
She's right though, Trump is a twat.
My problem with Streep is that her speeches are like Alec Baldwin in Team America, it's all just a over the top acting session.
the reason why i am bringing age into it is because by 67 years old you should know better than this. if you're miley cyrus, saying this shit, then, ok, but for fucks sake. saying things like the media should fight for "freedom" and not be censored, when literally every mainstream US media outlet is as biased as they come, pro-democrat and spewing her preferred type of politics anyway. it's ridiculous.
“Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners,” Streep said, listing several actors who were born in Canada and other places outside the United States. “And if we kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and Mixed Martial Arts, which are not the arts.” she said.
for fucks sakes, she sounds like she's 13 years old. clearly Trump campaigned against illegal immigration, and heavy monitoring from nations with known islamic "issues" for security reasons. it's got nothing to do with "outsiders and foreigners" if you are all ready in the US. Noone is going to be rounded up and expelled. if you are illegal, then ok, you may problems. but jesus.. cringeworthy.
Her comments about MMA were laughable and the whole speech stunk of the insular liberalism that makes me hate most of Hollywood. The UFC is far more diverse and offers people from poor backgrounds a much better chance of success than Hollywood does, but she's wrapped up in that little bubble and doesn't have a fucking clue what she's talking about.
Looking at the current UFC champions:
HW: Stipe Miocic - Cleveland born son of Croatian immigrants. Still works as a fire fighter
LHW: Daniel Cormier - African American from Louisiana.
MW: Michael Bisping - Working class Englishman of Polish descent
WW: Tyron Woodley - Working class African American from Ferguson Missouri
LW: Conor McGregor - Working class Irishman
FW: Jose Aldo - Non English speaking Brazilian from an incredibly poor background
BW: Cody Grabrandt - Working class white mid westerner and product of a broken home
WBW: Amanda Nunes - Openly gay Brazilian woman and now the biggest draw in WMMA
FLW: Demetrious Johnson - 5'3" African American computer geek
WSW: Joanna Jedrzejczyk - Polish woman
There's currently about 50 different nationalities represented within the UFC from a hugely diverse range of social backgrounds. The vast majority of Hollywood stars are upper or upper-middle class white Americans or Home Counties English who have relied on their family wealth to get them the training and open the doors they've needed. Even the Black, Asian or Latin actors in Hollywood will generally have come from a much more privileged background than the likes of Miocic, Garbrandt or any of the other White American fighters in the UFC.
Was it cringeworthy, yes definitely, that whole MMA is not the arts line was just awful. But she to my knowledge is one to really stand on a soap box and preach much, she clearly felt strongly about the issue and I don't really have an issue with her or any other actor using the platform they have been given to express how they feel, freedom of speech and all that malarkey.
but it wasn't just opinion. a lot of what she said was incorrect and hypocrisy. immature political statements. i am no ageist, just the opposite. i think with age comes wisdom.. which is why i'm surprised you can get to 67 years old and still be so overly confident as to spout this (poorly researched) bullshit to a room full of people.
I cant believe im agreeing with Piers Morgan. I like Meryl Streep. I think as far as actresses go she is amazing, and her off screen persona seems fairly grounded for Hollywood. It's just when celebrity and politics mix it's as if celebrities lose a dozen or so IQ points. If Streep uses her platform to express herself(especially as she is lying or being hypocritical) then we also should be able to use our platform to metaphorically string her up from the nearest tree.
