Logan heavyweight boxer Alex 'The Lionheart' Leapai has announced a comeback to the sport.

Leapai retired in February following the death of his father and being warned he could go blind if he kept fighting.

He became the first Australian to challenge for the heavyweight world title in 106 years when he fought Wladimir Klitschko in 2014, ultimately losing by knockout inside five rounds.

After being inducted into the Logan Sports Hall of Fame last night, Leapai said he had unfinished business in the sport.

"I'm making a return back to the game," he said.

"Everything's all sorted out now, my eyes, had an operation on my eyes.

"My dad's in a good place now and it's just about time, it's time to unleash the beast."

Leapai said he was already back in training.

"Hopefully December will see me back in the ring," he said.

"I got a few offers overseas. We want to train hard, we want to win a world title and bring it home for Logan and Australia."

Back in February the 36-year-old told the ABC: "I'm finished, I'm gone. You'll never see 'The Lionheart' in the ring again."

Leapai had 30 wins, seven losses and three draws in 40 professional fights after making his debut in 2004.

Yes, I agree. However, the winner should be mandated to fight Fres Oquendo,

Retired because his eyes were stuffed didn't he? I don't like the look of this. Probably all about money and to hell with the risks. These sort of comebacks usually are.

Just like Michael Katsidis it is hard to see a positive in Alex Leapai returning to the ring. It sounds like he is looking to fight Lucas Browne and that is hardly likely to do his suspect eyes any good.
