I don't think he won the first fight but I really don't want to see JMM fight anyone now. He's been out for too long, clearly his body's breaking down and I'd hate to see one of my favourite fighters take a beating from a younger man.
Would be foolish to come back now and take it, fight had to happen right after the 4th and I'm personally glad it didn't. Great ending to a great fight series.
He didn't beat Pac four times but he did provide the exclamation point on the saga which should have been enough for him. It's a shame the ultimate victory wasn't enough to dilute the salt.
For the record I had Pac winning the second fight by one point thanks to the knock down. Even rounds minus the one point. The first fight was so razor thin I wouldn't argue either way. I see the series as 2-1-1.
It's not even worth discussing since neither Pacquiao nor Arum have ever shown any inclination to pay Marquez anything significantly more than he's made in the past to get him back in the ring. The most logical conclusion is that they simply don't want the fight, despite Marquez being old and breaking down.
He did let Marquez sit on those losses for years and repeatedly made him weight chase to get remathces. And those rematches were only granted because Marquez was the most lucrative name opponent available, not because Manny wanted to settle a score or finally get a clear win or because he thought he owed it to Marquez.
I had it 2-2. I remember when the third fight was announced and everybody was saying Pac would walk right through him, he was "a different animal" I maintained although he had improved, he had the same style, and Marquez would give him hell. I put £10 or £20 on a draw and was so so close to winning £2500. Marquez won the fight series, but Pac is undoubtedly the better and greater fighter. Fantastic rivalry, no need for a 5th when they are both 10 years removed from their primes, the way it ended was spectacular.
Second one is the closest imo, had it 6-6 with the KD settling it. Marquez has a couple of really good middle rounds when Pac gets cut and obviously the KD round for Pac but just about every other round could go either way.
Idk about that. I scored that round properly and gave Pacquiao the second round as well. What rounds did Pacquiao really win after that? He won one of the later rounds, but it was mostly Marquez after the slow start
Manny's best case for a win is the 2nd fight, but that fight is easiest to score round to round. The closest round is the 7th, and I think Marquez edged that one, making it 7-5.
2 judges gave round 6 to Pacquiao which was probably Marquez's most dominant round, pure corruption or at best incompetence.
JMM doesn't owe Manny any courtesy, he got almost none of his demands for the 4th fight in terms of pay, weight, and each time was really a chance for Manny to repair the damage to his aura. A mentally weaker fighter would have let Manny stay with the controversy with no chance to avenge it.
They did a catchweight to suit Marquez in the fourth fight and he got 3 million (guarantee plus PPV, gate etc) which was I think his third biggest payday. I know Manny will have made way more and that kinda sucks but sometimes thats just the way it is when one has mainstream credentials and the other doesn't.
I don't think either of those issues would be problematic. Juan doesn't want it because he got his fairytale ending and fair enough. Manny seems more interested in trying to coax Floyd into a rematch and fans aren't that interested because its became irrelevant after several losses for Pacquaio and Juan going into hiatus.
If it happened I would be buzzing because these guys have chemistry and would always have a FOTY contender no matter how old, what weight etc but if it didn't happen then I'm not fussed either.
I thought Marquez won the 3rd when I first watched it live.
I then watched it again 3 times over the following weeks with no sound. Every single time I scored the fight to Pacquiao (although barely). The statistics of the fight also go along with that.
He damaged his legacy once he started saying this a few years ago. Would have been better if he just kept it too himself and said nothing.
They have all been close. Even the last one up until the knockout. Had he clearly without doubt won in them all then absolutely he could say he has drawn a line under fighting him but he did not. For me they won 2 each.
When people tell him that Pacquiao gave him rematches so why should he not give a rematch. His says that Pacquiao gave him rematches because he knew he had lost. That shows his complete arrogance. Pacquiao gave him rematches because of MONEY and because the fans wanted the fights.
