    Shaun Tate takes a look at the potential fights ahead for Argentina's new superstar Lucas Martin Matthysse.


    Dubbed 'The Machine', Argentina's Lucas Matthysse sent out a statement of intent last night with a three round destruction of the usually durable IBF world titlist Lamont Peterson. After a cagey fist round whereby Peterson opted to box from range, Matthysse closed the gap in the second and dropped Peterson with a right to the body followed by a glancing left hook.

    Peterson saw out the round but again found himself on the canvas in the third after a beautiful short left hook landed directly on his chin and had him struggling to rise. After being felled again seconds later, again from a glancing left hook referee Steve Smoger stepped inside to end the carnage and a new star was born.

    The result has Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Shaefer excitingly labelling the Argentinian 'the new Manny Pacquaio' as his 140lb rivals Danny Garcia and Amir Khan watched on from ringside.

    With an unofficial tournament by GBP supposedly resulting in a Matthysse v Garcia fight in September, fight fans are salivating from the lips as to numerous potential fights 'The Machine' could be involved in in the near future.


    Light-welterweight


    Danny Garcia (26-0-0)

    The natural choice is for Matthysse to meet WBC champion Danny Garcia in a fight that pits the divisions number one and two together in a battle for supremacy. Matthysse is already in a mandatory position for the fight and gave up the chance to win Lamont Petersons IBF crown to make sure he stayed there.

    The boxers are under the same promotional banner and have progressed through an unofficial tournament to potentially meet later this year. With 48 KO's between them and both coming from action packed styles then this is a fight that could deliver the action that fans want to see.

    Garcia made his name as the divisions front runner with a knockout victory over Amir Khan and followed that up with a KO over former victim Erik Morales. garcia has also beaten Kendal Holt, Nate Campbell and Ashley Theophane as he climbed the rankings and has become one of GBP's top assets.

    My pick: Lucas Matthysse TKO4

    If the fight was to take place I think Matthysse would win via another highlight reel stoppage. Garcia is there to be hit and Matthysse will hit him and whilst Garcia hasn't shown any signs of having a weak chin, I see this fight going the action route early and Garcia coming out on the short side.


    Amir Khan (28-3-0)

    The next most marketable fight that is easiest to make would be Great Britain's Amir Khan. Khan has got himself back into a challenger position after back to back losses to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia with recent wins over Carlos Molina and Julio Diaz and is looking to again work his way back to the top of the division.

    In chasing a potential money spinner with P4P number one Floyd Mayweather Jnr, what better way would it be to send a message that he can hang with the best by defeating the big punching Argentinian that the majority of people would expect him to lose to.

    Khan has a stoppage victory over one of Matthysse conqueror's in Zab Judah and has also beaten his compatriot Marcos Maidana and with a marquee name in the boxing world this would be a highly marketable fight with high rewards for both pugilists.

    My Pick: Lucas Matthysse TKO2

    I don't see this fight going well for Khan if I'm totally honest. Khan doesn't have a great defence and his punch resistance has let him down on several occasions and would likely let him down again. I could see him having some success using his hand speed to land flurries before getting out and boxing from range but at some point he will get hot and I think as soon as he does he would get hurt and Matthysse would be all over him. I see it happening sooner rather than later so have gone for a very early stoppage.


    Zab Judah (42-8-0)

    Judah could have been overlooked for this one but the fact that he has a win over Matthysse means that he brings something to the table. Since the first fight, Judah won the IBF title against Kaizer Mabuza before losing it in his next fight via TKO to Amir Khan.

    A win over Vernon Paris saw him get a shot at Danny Garcia and most wrote him off as a time-filler for the American. Judah didn't follow the script though and made a fight out of it, having Garcia in some trouble late on before dropping a decision.

    My Pick: Matthysse TKO10

    Whilst the first fight was close and not as controversial as some like to make out (I had it to Matthysse by one point) I wouldn't expect Matthysse to make the same mistakes he did first time round in that he was too relaxed in his approach and did up the tempo till later on. He has improved tenfold since their first encounter and this time I would expect him to take the result into his own hands after a decent fight.



    Mike Alvorado (34-1-0)

    Another all action fight for him would be Colorado's Mike Alvarado who is fresh off his career-best win in avenging a loss to Brandon Rios. Alvorado has proved a tough customer working his way to the top of the division the hard way with victories over the likes of Carlos Molina, Breidis Prescott and Mauricio Herrera.

    His only loss to date came to Brandon Rios in a fight of the year candidate and he avenged that earlier this month in yet another barn burner. The main problem here though is they box for separate promotions and the last couple of years have seen GBP and Top Rank unwilling to make fights together.

    My Pick: Lucas Matthysse Decision

    I feel this is a tough fight for him. Alvorado is tough and like Matthysse he is a fairly solid all rounder with a massive heart and comes to fight. I think this is a great fight for the fans though as I would expect the styles to match up well and result in an epic battle.

    I think the fight goes the distance as well, Alvorado was stopped by Rios last year but he was still on his feet and willing to fight on. He proved int he re-match that he could gut it out till the end and overcome moments of difficulty. It would be a close fight and one that could go either way but I think Matthysse has enough to edge out the decision in the end.


    Brandon Rios (31-1-1)

    Like Alvorado, Rios boxes for a rival promotion which would make the fight unlikely to happen. Rios is a come forward slugger and a very good one at that who has victories over Mike Alvorado, Anthony Peterson, Miguel Acosta, Urbano Antillon and John Murray to his name. he also has a victory over Richard Abril but that came controversially as most felt Abril won comfortably.

    Rios has Manny Pacquaio up next in Macou and the result of that fight come be a game changer for the Californian. A win would elevate him back to the top of the mix at 140/147 and make him a very marketable fighter yet a loss could set him back (depending on how it comes) as he would be rebuilding from two losses on the trot.

    My Pick: Lucas Matthysse TKO11

    It was a lot harder to pick this fight as I feel the upcoming Pacquaio fight could have ramifications one way or the other. Rios has been in a lot of tough fights and its a credit to him and his chin that he has been able to absorb a lot of punishment thus far and come out a winner in the majority.

    Its likely to be another punishing fight with Pacquaio as well, even if he does emerge victorious and I feel that it could very well all catch up with him if he goes to war with the power punching Argentinian and have thus predicted a late stoppage.


    Adrien Broner (26-0-0)

    Already hyped up to be one of the superstars of tomorrow, Adrien Broner likes to make sure people know this as well with his 'character' already dividing fans to whether they love him or hate him. Personality aside, Broner has backed up his mouth in recent fights with one way demolition's of Gavin Rees, Antonio DeMarco, Eloy Perez, Vicente Escobego and Jason Litzau.

    You would have to go back to 2011 when he was last met with any 'problems' when he struggled to victory over Daniel Ponce De Leon. Broner has never fought at 140 but is scheduled at 147 for next fight against Paulie Malignaggi and is expected to return to 135 afterwards.

    My Pick: Lucas Matthysse TKO6

    I've never fully fell for the hype that Broner is receiving and at current believe he isn't quite as good as people like you to believe. He's talented for sure but he has a very leaky defence and his footwork isn't great and those two factors combined leads me to believe that Matthysse would be able to land enough on him early to get him out of there by the half way mark.


    Welterweight


    Floyd Mayweather Jnr (44-0-0)

    This ones probably still a fair bit off from becoming a reality but it would be silly not to assess the welterweight division and leave its star man off. Mayweather Jnr has become the enigma of today's boxing world, the puzzle that no one has been yet to solve and with the superfight with Manny Pacquaio having gone to the dogs, Floyd is in need of opponents who can offer up an equalizer to his excellence.

    Whilst he would start a huge underdog, Matthysse has that equalizer in his punching power and although it is untested at 147 at the very least it would offer up some questions in the back of peoples minds as to how Mayweather would react if he was caught with a big shot.

    My Pick: Floyd Mayweather Jnr Decision
    At this point I wouldn't be daft enough to gamble against Mayweather. He is far more experienced, is the more talented and skilled boxer and has the boxing brain to compose a game-plan that would avoid him getting into any sort of fire fight with Lucas and ultimately would see his way to a wide decision.

    What if Matthysse does land though? Well that's what possibly makes this fight a very interesting one for the future.


    Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6-1)

    Marquez is coming off his greatest victory in knocking out Manny Pacquaio in a six round war last December. He is now scheduled to fight Tim Bradley in what could act as a semi-final for another fight with Manny Pacquaio come next year (should he get by Rios).

    With Marquez at the back end of his career I don't see this fight happening and with him working closely with Top rank in recent year, that probably makes it a definite no but this would be a real fun fight pitting boxer v brawler, youth v experience and freshness v wartorn together in what would likely be another war of a fight.

    My Pick: Juan Manuel Marquez UD

    I think Marquez would be to experienced for Matthysse and would see out a decision after perhaps seeing the canvas. Marquez is an elite level boxer who can adapt to different fighting styles and this would be enough for him to win a fairly comfortable decision on the cards.



    Manny Pacquaio (54-5-2)

    Whilst his days as one of the top two boxers on the planet may be behind him, Manny Pacquaio is still one of the best boxers on the planet and a victory over him will very much top the list of just about anyone's resume from this era.

    Pacquaio has a big fight in Rios up next and should he prevail he will likely be sprung back into the elite mix of contenders. It's unlikely that Matthysse will be on this list as he boxes for a rival promotion and doesn't offer the same rewards that Juan Manuel Marquez, Tim Bradley and of course Floyd Mayweather do to the Filipino.

    My Pick: Manny Pacquaio TKO11

    Again, there is a lot of questions surrounding this fight. How much does Manny have left? will his punch resistance have been effected by the Marquez KO? can Matthysse slow Pacquaio down and get him to fight at his pace?

    I highly doubt this fight happens but if it did I still feel Pacquaio has enough left in him to break Matthysse down, overall being to fast for him and landing enough punishing shots during the fight to see out a late stoppage.


    Devon Alexander (25-1-0)

    Another former opponent in which he could look to avenge defeat against in Devon Alexander. Since their last fight, Alexander has moved up in weight and won himself one of the world titles and performed well in bouts against Marcos Maidana, Randall Bailey and Lee Purdy.

    My Pick: Lucas Matthysse Decision

    I see it playing out very much like the first but this time Matthysse has more of a name and wouldn't be subjected to poor officiating from the judges. Alexander has proved to be a durable fighter and he would stick it out till the end after enduring some scary moments but ultimately fall short.


    Tim Bradley (30-0-0)

    Tim Bradley's star power is at its highest ebb after defeating Manny Pacquaio (albeit controversially) last year to add to Bradley's growing record that includes wins over Lamont Peterson, Devon Alexander, Miguel Vasquez, Joel Casamayor and Juan Carlos Abregu.

    Bradley's last fight saw him show some real grit to get through a bout with Ruslan Provodnikov that saw him badly hurt on several occasions and pick him self of the canvas in the final round to scrape home.

    My Pick: Lucas Matthysse TKO12

    This would be a great fight, Tim would cause him all sorts of problems with his cagey style of boxing and would outbox him to win himself rounds throughout the fight yet I feel Matthysse would catch up with him and stop him late in what would be a dramatic affair.

    Bradley's pretty solid all-round but at the same time he still gets caught and I think he gets caught enough that at some point he gives Matthysse enough encouragement to get the job done.
